It is a time to reflect on the work of chaplains and honor them for their selfless service.

The observance was first held on February 1, 2020, in Stone Mountain, Georgia, by the Global Chaplains Alliance, bringing together chaplains from many fields of service.

Initially, it was marked only on the first Saturday of February, but from 2023 onward, it was expanded to cover the entire first weekend to allow more activities and wider recognition of chaplains around the world.
