It is to recognize the cultural importance of the bagpipe, one of the world’s oldest musical instruments.

The day was created by the Bagpipe Society and was first observed on 10 March 2012.

It encourages musicians and cultural groups around the world to celebrate bagpipe traditions through performances and events.

Although the instrument is strongly associated with Scotland, many forms of bagpipes are also found in several regions of Europe and Asia.
