On 12 March 1954, the Government of India established the Sahitya Akademi, the country’s National Academy of Letters.

It was created as an autonomous organization to promote and foster literary activities in Indian languages.

Headquartered in New Delhi, it supports literature in 24 recognized languages, including English.

The Akademi provides awards, fellowships, publications, and cultural programs such as seminars and workshops.

It is often referred to as the central institution for literary dialogue, publication, and promotion in India.

Its main aim is to enhance and preserve the country’s rich literary heritage.
