<p style="text-align: center;">On March 14, 1948, the SS Jala Usha was launched as India’s first indigenously built modern steamship.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">The ship was built at the Scindia Shipyard, now known as Hindustan Shipyard Limited.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">It was launched by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">The SS Jala Usha was an 8,000-ton ocean-going steamship measuring about 415 feet in length and 52 feet in breadth.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">It was the first modern ship to be entirely fabricated in independent India, marking the beginning of the country’s modern shipbuilding industry.<br />
