21 July Martyrs' Day in India

21 July Martyrs' Day or July 21 Shahid Diwas or Ekushe July Shahid Dibas, also known as Martyrs' Day in West Bengal, is observed annually on 21 July.

It commemorates the 13 people who lost their lives during a police firing on a protest march near Writers' Building in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, in 1993. The march demanded mandatory photo voter identity cards to promote fair elections.

It is observed primarily in West Bengal by the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), while the Indian National Congress also pays tribute separately. Tribute ceremonies, memorial gatherings, public meetings, and speeches are organized, especially in Kolkata, to honor the martyrs.

21 July Martyrs' Day in West Bengal promotes remembrance of the victims while highlighting democracy, electoral rights, peaceful protest, and public participation. The observance continues to hold historical, political, and public significance in West Bengal.
