Ambedkar addressed a Peasants’ Conference to fight for the rights of farmers and labourers.
On January 23, 1938, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar addressed a Peasants’ Conference at Ahmednagar (and Akola) amid strong protests against the exploitative Khoti system in Maharashtra’s Konkan region.
The system allowed Khots (landlords) to oppress tenant farmers through high rents, illegal levies, and forced labour.
Ambedkar led the resistance by introducing a bill in 1937 to abolish the system and by organizing mass peasant movements in 1938, especially in Ratnagiri.
His relentless struggle culminated in the abolition of the Khoti system by law in 1949.
