Ambedkar contested in the elections in the Bombay Presidency.

On 18 January 1937 to 20 February 1937, India’s first provincial elections were held across eleven provinces of British India under the Government of India Act, 1935.

On 17 February 1937, Polling was held in the Bombay Presidency as part of these provincial elections.

Babasaheb Ambedkar contested from the Bombay City (Byculla and Parel) General Urban constituency.

His election symbol was a “man.”

The election results were announced on 24 February 1937.

He won the election by a huge margin and later took his official oath as an MLA on 19 July 1937.

Although the Muslim League had more seats, Ambedkar acted as the de facto Leader of the Opposition.

He challenged the Congress ministry on labour and land issues.

These actions established him as a major political force.
