Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a massive strike in Mumbai where more than two lakh workers participated.
In September 1938, the Congress government introduced the Industrial Disputes Bill in the Mumbai Legislature, which sought to criminalize strikes.
The strike was organized mainly by Ambedkar’s Independent Labour Party (ILP) in opposition to the Industrial Disputes Bil/Act of 1938, which sought to curtail workers’ rights to strike and protest.
The rally was attended by over 100,000 striking workers, and overall participation across Bombay exceeded 200,000 workers from various trades, who passed a unanimous resolution condemning the anti-labor legislation.
Ambedkar strongly opposed this legislation, labeling it the “Workers Civil Liberties Suspension Act,” as it criminalized the right to strike.
