Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha to challenge caste-based untouchability and assert the right of Dalits to access public water.

On 20 March 1927, Ambedkar organized the Mahad Satyagraha, through which Dalits gained access to Chavdar Tank public water while fighting untouchability.

The Municipality has passed order since 1924 to this effect but it could not be implemented.

Later Ambedkar won ‘The Mahad Satyagraha’ case in Bombay High Court.

The day 20 March is observed as Social Empowerment day every year in India.
