On 20 January 1957, India’s nuclear reactor ‘Apsara’, the first nuclear reactor in Asia, was dedicated to the nation.

Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru named this reactor ‘Apsara’.

It achieved its first criticality (became operational) on August 4, 1956, at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Trombay (now part of Mumbai).
