Aurangzeb reintroduced the Jizya tax on non-Muslims during his reign.

On 15 March 1564, Mughal Emperor Akbar abolished the Jizya tax imposed on non-Muslims in the Mughal Empire.

This decision became an important part of his policy of Sulh‑i‑Kul, which promoted religious tolerance and harmony among different communities.

In 1563, Akbar had already abolished the pilgrimage tax that was collected from Hindus visiting sacred places such as Mathura and Varanasi.

Akbar considered these taxes unfair and discriminatory, and removing them helped build trust among his non-Muslim subjects.

The Jizya tax remained abolished during the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan.

However, it was reintroduced on 2 April 1679 by Emperor Aurangzeb, who restored the tax on non-Muslims as part of his more orthodox Islamic policies.
