The Battle of Bhima Koregaon was fought.
The Battle of Koregaon (also known as the Battle of Bhima Koregaon) was fought on 1 January 1818 during the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1817–1818/1819).
It occurred as Peshwa Baji Rao II tried to reassert Maratha control amid internal divisions, British expansion in western India, and conflicts involving Pindari raiders.
A small British East India Company force of about 834 troops, led by Captain Francis Staunton, was en route to reinforce Pune but fortified itself at Koregaon Bhima to resist the advancing Peshwa army.
A large part of this force consisted of Mahar soldiers, a Dalit community in Maharashtra, who played a key role in holding the position.
The battle delayed the Peshwa’s advance and contributed to the British consolidation of power, leading to the Peshwa’s surrender and the end of Maratha independence by 1818/1819.
It is remembered as a symbol of Dalit valor and resistance against oppression under the Peshwa regime.
