Chiranjeevi, born Konidela Siva Shankara Varaprasada Rao, is an Indian film actor, producer, narrator, dancer, television personality, politician and philanthropist. He is one of the most prominent and influential figures in Telugu cinema and is popularly known as the “Megastar.”

Early Life

Chiranjeevi was born on 22 August 1955 in Mogalthur, Andhra Pradesh, India. After completing his education, he trained in acting at the Madras Film Institute and subsequently entered the Telugu film industry.

Film Career

He began his acting career in the late 1970s and gradually emerged as one of Telugu cinema’s leading stars. His screen presence, action performances and distinctive dancing style contributed significantly to his popularity.

His notable films include Khaidi, Challenge, Swayam Krushi, Rudraveena, Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari, Gang Leader, Gharana Mogudu, Indra, Tagore and Shankar Dada MBBS.

He was initially popularly called “Supreme Hero” and later became widely known by the title “Megastar.”

First Indian Actor to Cross ₹1 Crore Remuneration

Chiranjeevi achieved a major milestone in Indian cinema when he was reportedly the first Indian actor to command remuneration exceeding ₹1 crore for a film. His remuneration for Aapadbandhavudu (1992) was reported to be around ₹1.25 crore, placing him among the highest-paid Indian actors of the period.

Awards and Honours

He received numerous awards and honours for his contribution to Indian cinema.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2006 and the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2024.

He is also a recipient of Nandi Awards and multiple Filmfare Awards South. In 2022, he received the Indian Film Personality of the Year honour at the International Film Festival of India.

Chiranjeevi holds the Guinness World Record as the most prolific film star in the Indian film industry in the actor/dancer category. The record, achieved on 20 September 2024, recognizes his documented performances as an actor and dancer across 143 films, including 537 dance songs.

Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust

He founded the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust in 1998. The organisation became particularly associated with blood donation and eye donation initiatives and other charitable activities.

His sustained involvement in charitable causes has also established him as a prominent philanthropist.

Anjana Productions

Chiranjeevi is a co-founder of Anjana Productions, a film production company associated with the Konidela family. The banner has produced several Telugu films.

Political Career

Chiranjeevi entered active politics by founding the Praja Rajyam Party in 2008. The party contested the 2009 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.

Praja Rajyam Party later merged with the Indian National Congress in 2011. Chiranjeevi subsequently served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha and as Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism in the Government of India.
