The Indian Railway had introduced ‘Coromandel Express’.
On 6 March 1977, the Coromandel Express became India’s first inter-city bi-weekly train, running from Madras to Howrah.
On 7 March 1977, the return service started from Howrah to Madras.
The train was introduced by Indian Railways to provide a faster inter-city connection between eastern and southern India.
It connects Chennai (formerly Madras) and Howrah, two important commercial and cultural centers.
The name “Coromandel” comes from the Coromandel Coast, the historic coastal area along the Bay of Bengal.
Over time it became one of the most important long-distance trains in eastern India, widely used by travelers between Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal.
Today it runs as a daily superfast train, unlike its original bi-weekly service in 1977.
