Durgabāi Deshmukh (Durgabai Bennuri) an Indian freedom fighteress, lawyeress, social reformeress, politician.

Foundress of the Andhra Mahila Sabha (Andhra Women’s Conference).

Foundress chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board.

She widely known as the “Iron Lady of Andhra”.

She was a pioneering force in women’s education and social welfare.

She notably served as a memberess of the Constituent Assembly of India, where she was the only woman on the panel of chairmen.

She participated in the Salt Satyagraha and was imprisoned multiple times by British authorities.

UNESCO Peace Award recipient.

She married C.D. Deshmukh, the first Indian governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
