The world’s first general-purpose electronic computer, the ENIAC, was formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

The ENIAC was designed by physicist John W. Mauchly and engineer J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.

Six women—Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Wescoff, Frances Bilas, and Ruth Lichterman—programmed the machine by rewiring cables and setting switches.

It weighed about 30 tons, used around 18,000 vacuum tubes, and filled about 1,800 square feet.

It was about 1,000 times faster than earlier machines and could do about 5,000 additions per second.

On February 14, 1946, ENIAC was publicly announced and demonstrated.

On February 15, 1946, it was formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania, and this day is celebrated as ENIAC Day in Philadelphia.
