The first known elephant in America, the ‘Crowninshield Elephant,’ arrived in the United States from Bengal, India.
The elephant was a two-year-old female from Bengal, India.
She was purchased by Captain Jacob Crowninshield and shipped aboard the merchant ship America.
The ship departed Calcutta on 3 December 1795 and arrived in New York on 13 April 1796.
This elephant is widely recognized as the first living elephant in America and was exhibited in New York soon after her arrival.
