In British India, Maharaja Nandakumar became the first Indian to be hanged.
He was executed on August 5, 1775 in Calcutta (now Kolkata).
Nandakumar was a prominent tax collector under the East India Company and had accused Governor-General Warren Hastings of corruption.
He was tried for forgery, which was a capital offense under British law, in a highly controversial trial presided over by Sir Elijah Impey, the first Chief Justice of India.
Many historians view his execution as politically motivated rather than a fair judicial proceeding, making it one of the first notable instances of British judicial execution in India.
Raghuraj Singh was the first Indian was executed after independence in India.
