In India, the first widow remarriage took place in Calcutta.

This remarriage under the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856 took place, at the residence of Rajkrishna Bandopadhyay in north Calcutta.

The groom was the son of Ishwar Chandra’s close friend.

On 16th July 1856, The Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act, 1856 legalized the remarriage of Hindu widows in British India.

The Act was enacted on 26th July 1856.
