Mahatma Gandhi met Rabindranath Tagore for the first time.

On 6 March 1915, Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore first met at Santiniketan in West Bengal.

This meeting occurred only a few months after Gandhi returned to India from South Africa in January 1915.

Gandhi stayed at Santiniketan for nearly a month, interacting with students and teachers.

This meeting marked the beginning of a friendship and intellectual dialogue that lasted until 1941, the year Tagore died.

Rabindranath Tagore helped popularize the title “Mahatma” for Mahatma Gandhi across India., while Gandhi respectfully called Tagore “Gurudev.”
