Mahatma Gandhi was arrested on sedition charges in Bombay by the British government.

On 10 March 1922, Mahatma Gandhi was arrested at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad for publishing three articles in his newspaper Young India that were considered seditious by the British colonial government.

The trial, popularly known as the “Great Trial,” took place on 18 March 1922, where the presiding judge C. N. Broomfield sentenced Gandhi to six years of simple imprisonment.

However, Gandhi was released unconditionally on 5 February 1924 after serving nearly two years of his sentence.

His early release was granted on medical grounds following an emergency appendicitis surgery at Sassoon Hospital in Pune.
