The Gateway of India was officially inaugurated.
On 31 March 1911, the foundation stone of the Gateway of India was laid by Sir George Sydenham Clarke, the Governor of Bombay.
The monument was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India.
It was designed by Scottish architect George Wittet in the Indo-Saracenic style.
Construction was delayed due to land reclamation and design changes.
On 4 December 1924, the Gateway of India was officially inaugurated to the public by Viceroy Rufus Isaacs.
