The first passive euthanasia case approved by the Supreme Court of India was recorded.

On 24 March 2026, Harish Rana, the first Indian allowed passive euthanasia, died after over 13 years in a coma at AIIMS, New Delhi.

On 11 March 2026, the Supreme Court approved the withdrawal of life support at his parents’ request.

While such cases existed earlier in hospitals, this is the first to be formally approved by the Supreme Court.

In a 2013 accident, the Panjab University student suffered severe brain injury and remained bedridden, breathing through a tracheostomy tube and fed via a gastrojejunostomy tube.
