Gujarat state was formed in India.
On 1 May 1960, Gujarat state formed, through the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, which bifurcated the bilingual Bombay State into Gujarat for Gujarati-speaking people and Maharashtra for Marathi-speaking people. This followed the Mahagujarat Movement, a political agitation led by figures like Indulal Yagnik, demanding a separate state based on linguistic identity.
