On November 8th 1972, Home Box Office (HBO), the American cable television company was launched by Charles Dolan and Time Inc, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA.

The channel launched with 365 subscribers, airing a live NHL game followed by a movie.

Before being named HBO, it was initially proposed as Sterling Cable Network and later considered The Green Channel.
