Hindu women in India gained the right to contest elections.

On 2 May 1926, regulations published in the Official Gazette at Shimla made Hindu women eligible to seek elected office in Indian legislatures.

This marked a major milestone in the women’s suffrage movement.

Women had previously been ineligible to stand for elections in most provinces.

Later in 1926, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay became among the first Indian women to contest a legislative election, though she narrowly lost.

After that, Muthulakshmi Reddy became the first woman legislator in India.

Full and equal voting rights were established after independence with the Constitution of India, which came into force in 1950.
