India’s first organized space research committee, INCOSPAR, was established.
On 23 February 1962, the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) was established by the Government of India.
It was formed under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) on the recommendation of Vikram Sarabhai, with approval from Jawaharlal Nehru.
INCOSPAR played a crucial role in starting India’s space program and putting the country in the global space race.
On 15 August 1969, the Indian Space Research Organisation was formed, replacing INCOSPAR with a broader role to develop and use space technology.
