India adopted the national calendar based on the Saka Era.

On 22 March 1957 (1 Chaitra 1879 Saka), India officially adopted the national calendar based on the Saka Era.

It was introduced on the recommendation of the Calendar Reform Committee (1952), headed by Meghnad Saha, to establish a uniform and scientific system alongside the Gregorian calendar.

The calendar is used for official purposes such as the Gazette of India, All India Radio broadcasts, and government communications.

The Saka year begins on 1 Chaitra (22 March, or 21 March in leap years) and consists of 12 months.

The Saka Era, beginning in 78 CE, is traditionally linked to the reign of Kanishka.
