On 26 February 2019, India conducted airstrikes on a Jaish-e-Mohammed training camp near Balakot in Pakistan in response to the Pulwama terror attack.

The operation was described as the first Indian airstrike inside Pakistan since 1971.

On 27 February 2019, Pakistan launched an aerial response across the LoC, leading to an air battle in which Abhinandan Varthaman’s MiG-21 was shot down and he was captured.
