Indian Bank began its operations during the Swadeshi movement.

On 5 March 1907, Indian Bank was established in Madras (now Chennai) as a joint-stock company by S. Rm. M. Ramaswami Chettiar and a group of prominent Indian businessmen, with an authorised capital of ₹20 lakhs.

It commenced its business on 15 August 1907.

In the same year, Indian Bank Ltd. adopted the banyan tree as part of its emblem, symbolising all-round progress, widespread growth, stability, and ever-increasing prosperity.
