Indian National Congress was established.

On 28 December 1885, The Indian National Congress came into existence when 72 social reformers, journalists, and lawyers assembled for its first session at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College, Bombay (now Mumbai).

Prominent leaders associated with the early Congress included Dadabhai Naoroji,  Badruddin Tyabji, Pherozeshah Mehta, W. C. Bonnerjee, S. Ramaswami Mudaliar, S. Subramania Iyer, and Romesh Chunder Dutt.

Surendranath Banerjee, though an important early nationalist and Congress leader, did not attend the first Bombay session.

Allan Octavian Hume, a former British civil servant, was a founding member and principal organizer of the INC, working closely with Indian leaders.
