India’s first confirmed swine flu death occurred.

On 3 August 2009, India recorded its first swine flu (H1N1) fatality in Pune, Maharashtra, when a 14-year-old schoolgirl succumbed to the virus at a private hospital.

The victim was a 14-year-old schoolgirl, Riya (or Rida) Shaikh, who died at Jehangir Hospital, a private facility, after a critical delay in testing and treatment.

On 13 May 2009, a 23-year-old man arriving in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, from the United States via Dubai and Delhi became India’s first detected case of swine flu (H1N1).

The case was officially confirmed by Indian health authorities on 16 May 2009, leading to widespread screening and surveillance at airports across India.

The outbreak quickly escalated into the 2009 swine flu pandemic in India, resulting in 46,102 confirmed cases and 1,833 deaths by August 2010.

On 18 October 2010 a biotechnology firm announced the launch of India’s first indigenously developed cell culture H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine under the brand name HNVAC.
