India’s first newspaper, Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, was printed and published in Calcutta.
On 29 January 1780, Hicky’s Bengal Gazette also known as ‘BengalGazette’ or ‘Calcutta General Advertiser’ became the first newspaper printed and published in India and Asia.
It was started by James Augustus Hicky in Calcutta.
The Gazette was an English‑language weekly that printed news, advertisements, and later sharp criticism of the British East India Company and its officials.
It ran for about two years before being forced to stop publishing when its press and types were seized by the authorities.
