Indira Gandhi is released from Tihar jail.
On 19 December 1978, Indira Gandhi was expelled from the Lok Sabha for breach of privilege and contempt of Parliament in connection with the Maruti Limited case.
The charge was that, while serving as Prime Minister, she had misused her office to favour Maruti Limited, a company associated with Sanjay Gandhi, and had not cooperated fully with the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee by withholding information.
The Morarji Desai–led Janata Party government invoked parliamentary privilege powers to sentence her to imprisonment for the remainder of the session.
She was freed from prison on the night of December 26, after spending one week in detention for breach of privilege and contempt of the Indian Parliament.
