Prime Minister Indira Gandhi officially lifted the Emergency in India.

On 25 June 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a national Emergency across India.

It was officially proclaimed by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution, citing an "internal disturbance."

The Emergency remained in force for 21 months, from 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977.

During the Emergency, civil liberties were curtailed, press censorship was imposed, political opponents were arrested, and general elections were postponed.

Annually on 25 June, the Government of India observes Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day) to commemorate the proclamation of the Emergency in 1975 and to honor those who opposed and suffered during that period.
