Insulin was used for the first time to treat diabetes in Canada. Leonard Thompson was the first person to have received an injection of insulin as a treatment for type 1 diabetes.

Over the next 12 days, James Collip worked day & night to improve the ox-pancreas extract, and a second dose was injected on the 23rd January 1922, This was completely successful. Canada was the first country to isolate insulin, a hormone that treats diabetes. Canadian surgeon Frederick Banting and medical student Charles Best isolated insulin in 1921 at the University of Toronto.
