International Asteroid Day
International Asteroid Day is observed annually on 30 June.
It was established in 2015 by the Asteroid Foundation to raise global awareness about asteroids, their scientific importance, and the potential risks of asteroid impacts.
The date commemorates the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia, the largest recorded asteroid impact event in Earth's history.
The United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed 30 June as International Asteroid Day in 2016 to promote public awareness of asteroid hazards and international cooperation in planetary defense.
The day is marked through public lectures, educational programmes, scientific discussions, telescope observations, exhibitions, and outreach activities that encourage research, space exploration, and preparedness against potential asteroid impacts.
