International Mud Day

International Mud Day is observed annually on 29 June.

It celebrates the joy of outdoor mud play and encourages children to connect with nature through creative, sensory, and unstructured play.

The observance originated in 2009 after Australian educator Gillian McAuliffe and Nepali educator Bishnu H. Bhatta discussed the different challenges children faced in playing with mud during the World Forum for Early Childhood Care and Education in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

It was initiated through the Nature Action Collaborative for Children (NACC), a working group of the World Forum Foundation.

The day promotes children's physical, social, emotional, and sensory development through safe and enjoyable outdoor mud play.

It is celebrated by schools, early childhood centres, families, and communities around the world through mud play, creative activities, and nature-based learning experiences.
