The city of Jodhpur was founded.

On 12 May 1459, Rao Jodha, the 15th Rathore ruler of Marwar, laid the foundation of Mehrangarh Fort after shifting his capital from Mandore to the rocky hill of Chidiyanath (Bhakurcheeria).

This event is regarded as the foundation of Jodhpur, which later developed and expanded below the fort to become the capital of Marwar.

Jodhpur is popularly known as the “Blue City” for its blue-painted houses and the “Sun City” for its bright sunny weather throughout the year.

The princely state of Marwar (Jodhpur State) later merged into the modern Indian state of Rajasthan after Indian independence.

Jodhpur Foundation Day (Jodhpur Sthapana Diwas) is celebrated annually on 12 May.
