The last British troops left India through the Gateway of India.

On 28 February 1948, the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry was the last British combat unit to leave India.

They marked their departure with a ceremonial march through Bombay (now Mumbai), passing the Gateway of India before embarking for home.
