Maharashtra state was formed in India.
On 1 May 1960, Maharashtra state formed, through the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960.
The Act divided the erstwhile Bombay State into Maharashtra and Gujarat, primarily on linguistic lines for Marathi- and Gujarati-speaking populations.
The formation followed strong regional movements, including the Mahagujarat Movement led by Indulal Yagnik and the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement for a separate Marathi-speaking state.
