Mahatma Gandhi was arrested for not carrying the required registration certificate.
On 25 February 1909, Gandhi was arrested at Volksrust in the Transvaal, south africa, for failing to produce the required registration certificate under the Asiatic Registration law.
He was tried the same day and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, for this failure to produce the registration certificate.
This was one of the significant episodes in his early South African struggle against racist laws.
This was part of Gandhi’s Satyagraha campaign protesting the Transvaal Asiatic Registration Act, also called the “Black Act.”
