One of the most prolific playback singers in Indian cinema.

He has recorded more than 35,000 songs in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Tulu, Konkani, Assamese and other languages.

He has performed more than 3,000 live concerts across the world.

He was one of the leading playback singers of South Indian cinema during the late 1980s and 1990s.

He is widely known for singing numerous hit songs composed by Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman.

He became the regular Telugu dubbing voice for Rajinikanth from Muthu (1995) onwards.

His son, Shakir Babu, is also an actor.
