Microsoft was founded.

On 4 April 1975, childhood friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft under the name “Micro-Soft” in Albuquerque.

The company was founded to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800 and was based in Albuquerque, home to MITS, its manufacturer.

On 26 November 1976, Microsoft dropped the hyphen from “Micro-Soft” and officially registered its name as “Microsoft.”

On 12 August 1981, Microsoft released MS-DOS as the operating system for the first IBM PC by IBM.

On 20 November 1985, Microsoft released its first version of Windows.
