Minorities Rights Day – India
Minorities Rights Day also known as National Minorities Rights Day, is observed annually in India on December 18.
The day commemorates the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 1992, of the Declaration on the Rights of Persons Belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities.
This UN Declaration emphasizes the protection of minorities’ rights to enjoy their culture, practice their religion, and use their language freely.
In India, the observance aligns with the establishment of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) in 1992 under the National Commission for Minorities Act.
India began formally celebrating it around 2013 to reinforce domestic commitments to minority rights.
