National Dolphin Day – India

National Dolphin Day in India is celebrated annually on October 5th.

It is to raise awareness and promote the conservation of India’s dolphin species, particularly the Ganges river dolphin, which was declared the national aquatic animal in 2009.

This day was announced by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in March 2022.

It is to highlight the importance of dolphins as ecological markers and to advocate for measures to protect their riverine habitats from threats like pollution and dam construction.
