Nelson Mandela International Day
Nelson Mandela International Day is observed annually on 18 July.
It commemorates the birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela, South Africa's anti-apartheid leader, global humanitarian, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and the country's first democratically elected President.
The observance was established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 10 November 2009 and was first observed on 18 July 2010 to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy of peace, freedom, democracy, equality, justice, reconciliation, and human rights.
The day encourages people to dedicate 67 minutes to community service, honouring the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted to public service.
It is marked through volunteering, charity initiatives, community service, educational programmes, humanitarian activities, social justice campaigns, and human rights awareness events worldwide.
