Blowout that occurred in the Paasharlapudi oil rig was brought under control.
On 8 January 1995, the Paasharlapudi Blowout occurred at Sector-19 in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, at a drilling site of the ONGC.
The blowout triggered a massive fire, with flames rising nearly 200 metres into the air and burned continuously for 65 days.
Historically, the Paasharlapudi blowout is cited as the largest and most intense oil rig blowout in India’s history.
Initially, Neil Adams Fire Fighters (NAF) from Houston were hired to control the blaze but later withdrew after strategic disagreements with ONGC.
On February 26, ONGC awarded a well control contract to International Well Control (IWC), Houston.
On 15 March 1995, the well was finally the oil rig was brought under control by IWC and ONGC’s internal Crisis Management Team (CMT).
