Pi Approximation Day
Pi Approximation Day falls annually on July 22.
Also known as Fraction Pi Day, the observance highlights the mathematical constant π (pi) through the fraction 22/7, a widely used historical approximation. The day celebrates mathematics, geometry, science, engineering, and education.
The 22/7 approximation dates back over two millennia and appeared in the work of ancient mathematicians, including Archimedes, who established practical bounds for π using polygon methods.
Schools, universities, mathematics clubs, and enthusiasts mark the occasion with puzzles, geometry activities, lectures, quizzes, classroom demonstrations, and discussions about the history and applications of π.
Pi Approximation Day promotes mathematical curiosity, logical thinking, STEM learning, scientific discovery, and appreciation of one of mathematics' most important constants. It complements Pi Day (March 14) while emphasizing the classic 22/7 approximation.
