Qatar Independence Day

Qatar Independence Day is observed on September 3rd.

It marking the country’s formal independence from Britain in 1971. Until then, Qatar had been a British protectorate under a treaty signed in 1916, which placed its foreign policy and defense under British control.

On this day, Qatar emerged as a fully sovereign nation under the leadership of Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani and soon joined both the United Nations and the Arab League.

Although 3 September remains the official Independence Day, the country’s major national celebrations are now held on 18 December, known as Qatar National Day, which commemorates the accession of Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, regarded as the founder of modern Qatar.

Thus, Independence Day stands as a historically significant date, while National Day has become the centerpiece of patriotic celebrations in the nation.
